The Local News project is a partnership made between our TV affiliates and G1, for the purpose of covering the entire country within G1.com.br our journalism portal. The full project involves 3 templates (city, region and the country), the first of which is generated automatically for the approximately 6000 cities in Brazil, all filtered using semantic content. The second template features an editorial page for each affiliate per region, and thirdly a page about Brazil, with the most relevant news from around the country
The challenge from a design standpoint is to develop a single page template that would work for all editing scenarios, for all affiliates, knowing that some produce more than 50 daily news articles while other smaller affiliates produce less than 10.
Methodology
Throughout the project, we have been visiting some affiliates (Goiás, Curitiba, São Paulo and Sorocaba) to interview the journalists, and find out their work routines.
We created some personas to represent the different G1 user profiles, and some wireframes to validate the logic for all editing scenarios.
And with the usability lab of globo.com, we had the chance to test some symbols and labels with paper prototyping before defining them. Finally we did an usability test with 8 other users to test the final interface before publishing.
